Contoh Soal Analyzing Various Manuals and Recipes

Contoh Soal Analyzing Various Manuals and RecipesManuals and recipes have the same language features of procedures. They use simple present tense, imperatives, action verbs, adverbials, and connectives.
Further, manual is set of instructions on how to arrange or operate something, while recipe is more specifically used to refer to the instructions of making food. Besides, the structure of manuals and recipes are quite different, where in the recipe it usually mentions the material that is rarely found in manuals.
Procedure text such as manuals and recipes commonly begins with aims or goals. This is about what the set of instructions tells you about. The next part is materials. In recipes, this part consists of the ingredients and tools, while in manuals it is only the tools provided. Then it is followed by the main part of any procedure text, the steps. The steps refer to a set of actions or instructions to do to reach the goal. Conclusion usually takes part as the end of procedure text, but sometimes we find some procedure text without any conclusion; it is okay since conclusion mostly recalls the goals and all.

Do you understand?

To see the difference in the generic structure between recipe and manual, the following table will help you to analyze the difference between recipe and manual in general.

Recipe is most likely a set of instructions on how to produce something new, while a manual is more like a set of actions to do to overcome some issues; it is a set of instructions to operate things.

What should we do first? Can we use it directly or is there any special treat first before we use it? And how do we know all about information and instruction of the products we buy?
The answer is by seeing the guiding book or user’s guide called by manuals.
So in this chapter we are going to learn various models of manuals and how to use it so we can understand all kinds of manuals in daily life.

Manual belongs to procedure text. Manual is a guiding book for users that contains detail information about the product. It explains all information about the product start from the introduction of parts of tools, the function of each tools of the product, and how to use or operate and maintain the product. By reading the manual, it is hoped that the users can use the product or tool without any problem.
See the illustration below.

Unfortunately, he can’t operate the fire extinguisher because it is the first time for him to have a fire extinguisher. Then, he finds the manual and he found this:
By seeing the manual, Mr. Aldi knows that there are four steps to use the fire extinguisher. First, he should pull out the pin. Then, aim the extinguisher at the fire. After that squeeze and hold the handle. And the last, sweep the fire side by side.
From the situation above, we can highlight some information about manual. Since manual is part of procedure text, so there are some steps or procedures explained in the manual. We can see the introduction of the tool in manual like the name and the function and how to use or operate it. Whatever you need in your product can be found in manual. Some people call manual by the other names like user’s guide or guiding book.

Contoh Soal Understanding Manuals and Recipes

Contoh Soal Understanding Manuals and RecipesHave you ever made a cake? Or repair a toy? If your brother asks you to fix his toy -or your mom asks you to make a birthday cake- but you do not know how to, what would you do then?
Some of you might possibly just turn them down, but some others will find some ways to be a help. They would probably look for the manual instruction on fixing toys or some recipes of making birthday cake on the internet and then try them out. Those kinds of instructions are what so called procedures.
Procedure is defined as a set of actions of doing something. Procedures give the instructions to succeed dealing with matters in chronological order. Toys manuals and birthday cake recipes are the examples. The other common procedure texts include rules and experimental report.
Though they are look the same, manuals and recipes are more or less different. Recipe is more like a set of instructions to prepare and make food, while manuals are practical instructions to do something or to use something. Recipes are procedures of making pizza, how to make chocolate fondue, and steps of making delicious cake, while manuals are the instructions of setting up Gundam robots, how to repair a broken car, and building Lego palace. However, as any other procedural text, both manuals and recipes are similar in the features.

The common features of procedures are as follows:
  • Procedures use simple present tense since they talk about general ideas without time restriction.
  • Procedures use action verbs, such as take, turn, add, and so on.
  • Procedures mostly use imperatives: what to do, and what not to do.
  • Procedures use adverbial to reveal time, place, and condition: for two minutes, carefully, firstly
  • Procedures use connectives to set the chronological order: then, next, meanwhile
Example:
in recipe: ... then add the chocolate powder into the bowl, and do not stir too fast.
In manual: turn on the light in the backside carefully.
Do you understand?
Here you are provided with a recipe, make notes on the features in the text.

Contoh Soal Review , Diary

Contoh Soal Review , Diary

Contoh Soal Review , DiaryTo start with, look at a page of a diary below!
The diary shows several actions done in the past (Mom gave a toy car and sister bought cake). The diary also shows a condition or emotion in the past (I was very happy and it was very delicious).
A diary is a record or writings of activities that happens in the past. Because people commonly write diary daily, a diary usually contains the day’s activity and the date of the day. Therefore, a diary aims at keeping the record of personal experiences that happened on the day. Diary is also known as journal. We usually tell past stories on our diaries. We can see whether the story is in past tense or not from the time of action (this morning, years ago, and last holiday). To tell about past activity or event, we can use Simple Past Tense
  1. Simple Past Tense Simple past tense is used to tell about event, activity, action or condition that happened previously or before the sentence is said. There are two grammatical hints for simple past tense: the use of past verb and the time signal. a. The use of past verb In simple past tense, the verb used is past verb (in some references is also known as ‘Verb II’). The table below shows examples of past verb.
There are two types of past verb that can be used in simple past tense: action verb and non-action verb.
- Past sentence using action verb
A sentence which uses an action verb shows an activity or an action whenever read or listened.
For example: “I saw the movie yesterday”
The verb ‘saw’ shows an action or a mental image of someone watched a movie (maybe in the cinema or at home)
  • Past sentence using non-action verb A sentence with non-action verb does not show an action; instead it shows a condition or situation. In this kind of sentence, the verb used is usually a “be” verb, which the past form are was or were. For example: “They were happy last night “ The “be” verb ‘were’ is used to show a condition of being happy or glad that happened in the past (last night). For singular subject, such as I, it, he, she, or name of something/someone, we use was. For plural “they, we” and “you”, we use were.
b. Time Signal
Time signal is a word or a phrase that shows when the action/event happens. Although the use of time signal is not obligatory (meaning that a past sentence can have no time signal), it can sometimes show that a sentence is in past tense. Common time signals used in past sentence are last, ago, in (year), etc.
To help understanding the concept, pay attention to the example below!
